"Error loading theme TreeFlower" in CentOS 5.3

Good Day All,
After performing a fresh CentOS 5.3 32-bit from the installation cd, the machine request to reboot. Since its a normal process, i did as it says. Once it boots i get this error message "There was an error loading the theme TreeFlower".

Once I dismissed that error message, I was then presented with another one, reading "There was an error loading the theme, and the default theme could not be loaded. Attempting to start the standard greeter"

Finally, after dismissing after that error message, I was taken to the plain ol' GDM standard greeter (without any theme), where I could log in.

Once logged in, there was several other error message such as "The icon redhat-email.png could not be open" & "The icon redhat-browser.png could not be open"

So after much googling manage to find its a bug in the system. So to overcome this, the suggestion was to install an rpm file.

The rpm file is located here.

The download process is as per normal. So is the installation. Once the .rpm file is installed, you can see the email & web-browser icon is displayed. I even reboot to check whether the login screen is restored and yes it is.

So thanks to the CentOS people, i solved my problem.

More details on the bug is located here.

Hope this helped those of you who is having the similar problem. Thanks n together lets make open source better.

Future laptops...

With the cutting-edge technology mankind is developing every second ever wonder how things in the future gonna look like? Lets take laptop for instant. Nowadays you can own a "lappy" for as low as RM1900.00. How about in future?
Lets not talk about the price but we'll see about the designs. Shall we start ??

Monitor

Instead with the existing LCD, manufacturer will use Organic Light-emitting Diode (OLED) monitor to replace the existing Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) Monitor. The most significant benefit of of OLED displays over traditional liquid crystal displays (LCDs) is that OLEDs do not require a backlight to function. Thus they draw far less power and, when powered from a battery, can operate longer on the same charge. Because there is no need for a backlight, an OLED display can be much thinner than an LCD panel.

Hard Disk

The future Laptop will comprise of Solid-state Drives (SSD), which will give different architecture form the previous Hard Disk. The greatest benefit is the absence of moving parts. They also make a laptop about 25 percent lighter than one with a disk on board.

Keyboard

Instead of using the conventional keyboard, The new keyboard is made from the OLED. The technology is the same as OLED monitor except for the touch screen capability. Another advance feature is that you can change this keyboard to become second monitor. Now you have dual monitor Laptop… ;-)

Battery

Battery life is becoming an increasingly important issue for mobile computing users. With screens getting larger and brighter and laptop CPUs getting more powerful, the strains on batteries have continued to increase, and the technology just isn’t keeping pace. The use nanotechnology will increase the surface area of the plates much further. They attach millions of nanotubes, which are tiny synthesized “straws” comprised of a lattice of carbon atoms, to the capacitor plates. Another new method is the use of detachable solar power will increase the laptop lifetime while the power also able to recharge the laptop battery.

So how? Enough futuristic guys? Wonder how it feels like to play FIFA World Cup in this machine... Hmmmm....

Error : An error occurred while loading or saving configuration information for Nautilus. Some of your configuration settings may not work properly.

Good Day All,

After a long time i'm posting again in my blog... this time its about error while launching Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala after replacing a motherboard (mbo)..

This is the error message i get when i replace the mbo and use back the old hard disc with existing OS and data "An error occurred while loading or saving configuration information for Nautilus. Some of your configuration settings may not work properly."

Tried all i can n did some major search in Google, did find some info but didnt really solved my problem. So i asked help from a friend. After a lot of trial and error we manage to find the solution. So if anyone out there is facing the same problem, you might try this ;

# locate saved_state
(will giv out 2 findings, in /home/username directory and in /root directory)
# cd /home/username/.gconfd
# ls
(will show a file by the name "saved_state")
# rm -rf saved_state
(this will delete the file)
# reboot
(when the machine reboot, a fresh copy of the saved_state file will be generated and this should solved the problem)

Hope this solved your problem. Do feedback the outcome if you have tried this.

P.S : Thanks to my buddy who help me on this.

Nokia 5800 XpressMusic software

Hi Guys,

Be sure to check on your firmware version and update it from time to time. This will ensure that your phone is equiped with the latest info and updates. Although there is number of webpage that offer the downloadable file for the firmware, i strongly recomend to get it done from the phone itself or nokia webpage itself. As for me, i only do the updates from the phone itself (i'll explain later on how to check for updates on firmware). But if you have no problem on getting it from the web, here is one from nokia page itself.
Nokia 5800 XpressMusic software version 31.0.008
This software release comes with a new version of Ovi Maps, which offers improved maps and enhanced pedestrian and drive navigation. Additionally, the software release includes several performance improvements. This software release is available through the Nokia Software Updater at www.nokia.com/softwareupdates.

Although some of you may find firmware version 31.0.0.15 in the net, but i can seem to get in in nokia page or thru the phone firmware update, so i dont dare to recomend to you guys. But if any of you have tried it, and if it works fine, please do share it with us.

Getting back on how to check the firmware is
  • bring up the 'Dialer'
  • press *#0000# and you will see your firmware / software version (eg: V 30.0.011)
  • you may check when was the last update was done on the same page itself.
  • to check for updates, press 'option' and 'check for updates'.
This required internet connection, so i suggest to do this in any WiFi available spot (can also test your WiFi, at the same time, ;-) )

When doing this, u will not be able to use your phone, and your phone will restart so the new effect can take place. Please be informed.

More Nokia 5800 XpressMusic Tips and Tricks

Nokia 5800 XpressMusic, the latest touchscreen handset from Nokia, is 'trickier-in-its-own-way' than I thought. After writing the previous article about tips and tricks that I found while using it, I discovered other amazing features that make the device even more user-friendly than I had previously believed. In the following, I'll be presenting more Nokia 5800 XpressMusic tips and tricks that will help you customize the handset to the max.

There's the possibility of customizing the Shortcuts bar on the Home screen, if you choose to use it. The only drawback is that it can only contain 4 application shortcuts.

If you don't have your Shortcuts bar displayed on the screen then go to Main menu/Settings/Personal/Home Screen/Home Screen Menu Theme and select the Shortcuts bar. You can alter the default setting by going to Main menu/Settings/Personal/Home screen/Shortcuts.

Furthermore, for those who are installing and using a large number of third-party applications and don't have enough space on the Shortcuts bar to add their shortcuts for quick access, there's the possibility of rearranging all the icons that can be found in any folder in the Main menu.

By going to Main menu/Applications/Options/Organise and moving various applications using the drag and drop feature, you can change their places among each other.

Another interesting shortcut is the Green key (Accept calls), which can be used to send a message without the need of pressing any other key on the touchscreen. If you need to send the same message to multiple recipients, you just need to click the 'To' word displayed above your message, so you won't need to go into other menus. Also, when you're in any of the phone's menus, pressing the Green key will bring up the dialer. Bear in mind that doing this while the Home screen is displayed will only bring up the Call log. A long press on the same Green button will activate the Voice command function. If you ask the phone 'What time is it?' it will respond by telling you the time.

A long press on the middle button that opens up the Main menu will make the handset display the Task manager, which will show what applications you have opened. Nokia 5800 XpressMusic also features all the quick access commands available on all Nokia handsets with keypads. Just bring up the dialer and try any code that you know it works with other Nokia devices and you'll be surprised to find that it works with 5800 XpressMusic also.

Nokia 5800 Tips n Tricks

Good Day Guys,

This Nokia 5580 XpressMusic seems to impress me non-stop. Each and everytime i play or explore it, I discover new things or hidden tips and tricks. And the is the exact reason for me to start this blog in the 1st place, to share this with fellow 5580 users and to earn some of their knowledge on this cool phone.

Maybe some of you already know all these, but there's a slight chance that a new user still hasn't discovered all the tips that I'll be presenting. To illustrate these tips and tricks I took some screenshots that will make it easier for you to identify all the functions that you need to access.

Everything starts by waking up your device, by sliding the large button conveniently placed in the middle of the right side of the phone. The next important key for those who prefer to quickly access areas like Music, Internet, Messages, Video centre and Gallery is the Multimedia bar key. In fact, this is a touch-key, which you can find below the secondary video-call camera.

Check out the pictures to see exactly where it has been placed. The Multimedia bar contains shortcuts to the areas I mentioned above, without the need to open supplementary menus.

Clicking the clock on the Home screen will lead you to the Alarm menu where you can quickly set a new alarm. There are other shortcuts available on the Home screen, like the Connectivity menu, which can be accessed by clicking on the battery icon in the upper right corner of the screen. If you have USB connection or if the device is Bluetooth enabled, clicking the battery icon will give you fast access to these areas also.

In case you want to change the Profile of the phone or access the Calendar to set an appointment, you only need to click on the Profile name highlighted in the screenshots.

When browsing the Internet, in case you're wondering if you can zoom in/out a page, just double tap on the screen where you want to zoom and it will be done. Usually you can just drag the page to reach where you want, but there's also a scroll bar that activates only when you move the page up/down. It's a nice feature as it gives you an idea of how long a page really is.

Just because Nokia 5800 XpressMusic doesn't feature a keypad doesn't mean it’s less functional, on the contrary. These are just some tips that may help a Nokia fan get used to his new 5800 XpressMusic device. I'm pretty sure that there are more of these, but you can add them under the form of comments attached to this article.
